Opinions aside, the least people know about that stadium is it's name. It's the home of the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders in the minor leagues. That's it. No city, no long history of baseball. No Jackie Robinson.
Anyone who was around when it was built in 1920 could tell you it was being built and they could tell you who built it. The home of Scranton's first professional baseball team, and the new home of the Norfolk Tides, that stadium was no one-night-stand. It was two games of baseball here, and it was going to be forever.
There were some upgrades, because the turn of the century was the beginning of better baseball, but in essence, when it was built and when it was torn down, it was big-league-style, with the kind of amenities that the big leagues had back then.
"I can't tell you how much interest there is in it," said Dave Mastroianni, the public relations director for the RailRiders. "It's been that way all year. All year, people have been calling for it. The attendance's been great. The people love it."
Which has led to some good news: The state of Pennsylvania is giving the RailRiders a $200,000 grant, which will be used to help keep the stadium up and running during the 2014 season. It's money that could have been spent elsewhere.
If you think that's good news, I have some bad news.
The bad news is the RailRiders' lease with the city of Wilkes-Barre expires after the 2014 season. The lease is three years and runs through the end of the 2015 season. At the beginning of the year, the RailRiders seemed confident that their lease would be renewed. Then there was a glitch in the process, a three-year extension in the works, and that extension got rejected. be359ba680
